Some unfortunate news as soup season nears: A popular soup kit sold at Walmart across 29 states is being recalled.
Kettle Cuisine, a Maryland-based food manufacturer, says it is recalling its Marketside Tomato Bisque Soup Kit, sold exclusively at Walmart, because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The recall was announced by the company on August 12 and shared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration on August 13.
Which product is being recalled?
About 3,240 packs of Marketside Tomato Bisque Soup Kit, sold in 14-ounce (397-gram) packages, are currently subject to recall. The packages feature the UPC 194346474004 and are stamped with a Best By/Use By date of 8/22/26.
The soup kits come in “ready-to-heat,” microwavable wrapped trays. You can view the product packaging here.
Where were the recalled soup kits sold?
The soup kits were distributed from June 30 to July 7 to select Walmart stores in 29 states: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.
Why are the soup kits being recalled?
The recall was issued because the “routine testing” undertaken by Kettle Cuisine “produced a presumptive positive result for Listeria monocytogenes,” according to the company. An investigation, conducted in coordination with the FDA, is ongoing.
What is the danger of Listeria monocytogenes contamination?
Eating food contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes organism can lead to a serious and sometimes fatal infection. In healthy people, symptoms — commonly including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea — may resolve. However, in the very young, the very old, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant people, the infections may be severe or even deadly. Listeria infection may also cause miscarriage or stillbirth.
Has anyone gotten sick from consuming the recalled soup kits?
So far, there have been no confirmed reports of illnesses associated with the recalled soup.
What should you do if you have a recalled soup kit?
Don’t eat it. Instead, either throw it away or return it to wherever you bought it for a full refund. You are also urged to wash your hands after handling the recalled soup kit and to clean anything with which the product came into contact (such as fridges, freezers, containers, utensils, countertops or sinks).
What should you do if you've eaten the recalled soup?
If you have eaten it and developed symptoms of listeriosis, such as fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea or, in more severe cases, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance or convulsions, you should contact your healthcare provider — especially if you are pregnant.
What should you do if you have questions about the recall?
If you want more information about the recall or have questions, you can call the Kettle Cuisine Hotline at 617-409-1104, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET.
