Take note, tater tots fans: Nearly 39,000 cases of frozen tater tots sold under the Ore-Ida Tater Tots and Sysco Imperial Potato Tater Barrels brand names have been recalled. The reason? There is concern that the tater tots may be contaminated with “clear, hard plastic fragments,” according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The voluntary recall, which was originally issued by Idaho-based McCain Foods USA Inc. on December 3, 2025, was reclassified to a Class II recall on January 6, 2026. It is currently listed as “ongoing.”

The FDA defines Class II as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”

Anyone who has recently purchased tater tots in bulk will want to check their freezers to make sure they do not have any of the products being recalled. While neither the FDA nor the recalling company has issued specific instructions to consumers, it’s probably a good idea not to eat them, and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase.
