Lactaid drinkers, check your fridges. The parent company of popular lactose-free dairy milk brand Lactaid – Lynnfield, Massachusetts-based HP Hood LLC – has issued a voluntary recall of several products due to concerns that they may contain trace amounts of almond allergens not listed on the label.
The bad news is that the recalled products may be dangerous to people who have allergies or other severe sensitivities to almonds. The better news is that the company says the potential allergen risk was discovered during a “routine maintenance” check and no illnesses have been reported to date.
Following the discovery of the potential allergens, Hood has recalled five different Lactaid Milk products sold in 96-ounce plastic containers across 27 states, according to a company announcement shared online by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The products were shipped between September 5 and September 18, 2024, to retailers and wholesalers in the following states: Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
According to the September 20 announcement, also posted on the Hood website, the recall pertains to a limited number of 96-ounce plastic containers of refrigerated Lactaid Whole Milk, 2% Milk, 1% Milk, Fat Free Milk and 2% Calcium Enriched Milk. All the recalled products are marked with the code 51-4109 P2 and “Best By” dates listed in charts found here and here. (You can find the code and Best By dates printed toward the top of your plastic container of Lactaid, in the center.)
If you find that you have one of the recalled Lactaid products in your fridge, you are advised to return it to the retail location where you purchased it in order to receive a full refund — or to exchange it for a product that has not been recalled.
