The spring holidays are upon us. Like many, I'm in a serious carb-loading phase leading up to mine, which is celebrated sans bread and pasta. Pizza is very much on the menu in the coming days, as in bread in various forms.
So, when I heard about a rather concerning new recall impacting a whole bunch of pizza and bread products across the country, it felt like rather cruel timing. I'm still emotionally in that place, to be honest.
What is the pizza and bread recall?
The recall impacts ready-to-eat frozen pizzas and bread products from retailers ranging from a top meal-kit company to Trader Joe's, due to the risk they may contain metal fragments. It’s being implemented in ten states — Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, New Jersey, Texas and Virginia — and includes brands and retailers including HelloFresh, Frederik’s by Meijer, Fresh & Simple, Harris Teeter and Trader Joe’s.
The problem has been traced back to slow-roasted tomatoes that potentially contain metal fragments and has impacted 25,000 cases of products, from focaccia to pizza. (In other words, everything I'm craving today.)
This recall is categorized by the the Food and Drug Administration as Class II, which means while serious health consequences are remote, they are possible, and there also is a risk of temporary health issues. Nothing I want to mess with just to get a cheesy, carby fix.
Which products are being recalled?
All of the impacted lot numbers from the various brands are listed here, and if you spot any of them in your freezer, the FDA’s advice is to return it or toss it for a full refund.
Then, maybe grab some pizza at your corner spot or make your own instead. There's no reason to give up on our cravings — just proceed with caution!
