As an ice cream lover, I’ve been a fan of Van Leeuwen for quite some time — well over a decade, at this point. I was so excited to learn that the brand is expanding its lineup to include frozen yogurt.
What are the new Van Leeuwen frozen yogurt flavors?
Unlike most frozen yogurt shops that have a wide variety of flavors, Van Leeuwen is casting its net small and focusing on four quality flavors — tart, matcha, chocolate and strawberry.
“Over the past year we started seeing incredible demand for frozen yogurt, so we decided to lean in and do it the Van Leeuwen way — applying the same sourcing ethos we bring to our ice cream,” Ben Van Leeuwen, co-founder and CEO, said in a press release. “That means using organic A2 Bulgarian yogurt, shade-grown ceremonial-grade Japanese matcha and the finest pistachios from Sicily blended with kataifi.”
My honest thoughts on Van Leeuwen’s new frozen yogurt:
I was one of the first people to try the Van Leeuwen frozen yogurt at the opening event in New York City, and I have some thoughts. For starters, if you're hoping to have frozen yogurt that tastes like ice cream, then you'll be disappointed. This is frozen yogurt that tastes like frozen yogurt — it's light and airy while still having an appropriate thickness.
I was able to try all of the flavors, and my favorite was by far the matcha. It was so earthy and bitter, just how it's supposed to be. I added some chocolate curls and the brand’s best-selling Sicilian pistachio cream topping, and it was top-tier.
The tart was also a top contender as it was tangy and light. It's definitely not for everyone, but if you're looking for something with a unique flavor profile, then I would highly recommend it. The chocolate was also decadent and highly satisfying and paired well with the Nutella and strawberry toppings. My least favorite flavor was the strawberry, but mostly because I'm not a fruit yogurt kind of gal.
Overall, I was thoroughly impressed. The flavors matched the taste and quality of the brand’s signature ice cream while still tasting like frozen yogurt. I'd highly recommend trying it for yourself, if you can — it's unlike anything the brand has done before.
What else is there to know about Van Leeuwen’s new fro-yo?
Some of the other toppings you can pick from include mochi, toasted coconut, cookie dough, gummy bears, peanut butter cups, brownies, granola, Biscoff cookie crumbles, feuilletine and rainbow sprinkles.
As for pricing, it's $7.95 for a small serving with one topping, $9.25 for a medium with two toppings and $10.25 for a large with three toppings. For New York City, those prices are pretty much in alignment with other frozen yogurt shops, which is a good thing.
Where can you get Van Leeuwen's frozen yogurt?
Right now, the fro-yo is only available at the brand’s NoHo shop in New York City alongside the first storefront in Brickell, Miami. The chain plans to offer it at other New York City locations in the future.
