I've been following Khloud's journey for a year, now. Khloé Kardashian's functional snack brand started as a somewhat strange, if trendy, popcorn lineup. Since its launch last April, it's made its way into Starbucks, Target, Walmart and Kroger locations across the country. And it's not just this brand — according to a Khloud press release, protein-enhanced snacks are growing three times faster than their regular counterparts.

And now, the brand is going even bigger with its foray into a whole new snack category: chips.

What are Khloud Protein Chips?

They're tortilla chips made from whole grain, non-GMO corn. The namesake protein derives from peas.

“I created Khloud because I’ve always believed you shouldn’t have to choose between snacks you crave and ingredients you feel good about,” Khloé Kardashian, Founder of Khloud, says in the press release. “Chips are one of those snacks everyone reaches for, so it felt like the perfect next step for Khloud."

Like the popcorn, Khloud Protein Chips contain seven grams of protein per serving. For context, the Institute of Medicine recommends that adults eat 50 to 175 grams of protein per day, based on a number of factors including age, body weight and exercise. (Most Americans already consume enough protein.)

The new chips come in three flavors so far: Nacho, Buffalo and Sweet Heat. I got an early taste of all three.

My honest review of Khloud Protein Chips:

Overall, I thought the flavors were delicious, but there are a few flaws to work out.

First, I was disappointed with the amount of chips in each bag. I know chip bags are packed with air to prevent breaking and preserve their flavor, but each bag was only about half full. (In the photo, I'm pinching the bag where the chips end.) That seemed a little light to me.

And, like so many protein products, the texture was a little different from a typical tortilla chip. These were thin and didn't snap in a satisfying way. It's probably not something I'd notice if I weren't scrutinizing them, but after blind-tasting 19 brands in one sitting in our test kitchen one time, I like to think I have a distinguished corn chip palate. (Weird flex, I know.)

That said, I was impressed with the flavors. I loved the Buffalo in particular. One friend who tried them with me pointed out they have a a tangy sour-cream flavor, which sets them apart from any old hot chips.

The Sweet Heat was another favorite. Reading the ingredients label, they seem to use my go-to combo for eggs and potatoes — smoked paprika and garlic powder — plus brown sugar.

The Nacho was my least favorite flavor but the crowd-pleaser among my friends, who fought over who got to finish the bag. I believe that one is going for a Nacho Cheese Dorito flavor (which, funny enough, you can also buy in protein-chip form).

I'd also note that underneath the seasoning, the chips themselves have a little bit of bitterness. I'm not sure whether that's from the corn or the pea powder or both. I didn't mind it.

All said, I reached the same conclusion that I did for the popcorn: I'd definitely snack on these if they were in front of me, and the seven grams of protein is a nice bonus.

Where can you find Khloud Protein Chips?

Khloud chips are coming to Target ($6.99 per bag) in stores and online on April 8. You'll be able to order them on Khloud's website ($7.99 per bag, $27.99 for a four-pack and $83.99 for a 12-pack) starting April 21.
