I've been a fan of Kraft Mac & Cheese for years. I grew up eating it for family dinners, and even into adulthood, it is still a staple in my kitchen. Although I love it, I was hoping the brand would come out with a protein-packed option similar to Banza's.

The time has finally come. Kraft is adding a new protein- and fiber-boosted option to its lineup: PowerMac. I had the chance to try it ahead of its official launch. Once you get a spoonful of this, you won't want to go back.

What is Kraft PowerMac?

PowerMac is a new take on Kraft’s fan-favorite boxed macaroni and cheese. Made with proprietary noodles enriched with protein and fiber, it contains 17 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber per serving. For context, the Institute of Medicine recommends that adults eat anywhere from 50 to 175 grams of protein per day, based on factors including age and level of exercise. Meanwhile, research suggests women should eat 25 grams of fiber per day and men should eat 38 grams.

The new mac and cheese will be available in two flavors: original and white cheddar. There's no word yet on whether other flavors are coming, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed.

My honest thoughts on Kraft PowerMac:

Since I'm a Kraft Mac & Cheese enthusiast, I hoped that I was going to love it upon first bite. Luckily, I did.

I prepared it according to the directions on the back of the box, boiling the noodles in water for 7 to 10 minutes and then adding the cheese. I decided to toss in some broccoli for some extra nutrients, and the result was pure perfection — highly recommend.

The only real difference I noticed compared to the original version was that the noodles were a bit firmer. They weren't solid or chewy, but they definitely had a different consistency. That’s the case for other protein pastas I’ve tried, so I wasn’t surprised.

The cheese tasted similar, if not identical, to other boxes of Kraft I've had over the years. It had the same rich, creamy taste the brand is known for and no chalky texture typical of protein products.

Where can you buy Kraft PowerMac?

PowerMac is slated to roll out in April, and you’ll be able to find it at major retailers nationwide for $2.99 per 7.25-ounce box. The brand says it will expand to other formats later this year.
