I Tried Khloé Kardashian’s New Protein Popcorn and It Tastes Normal

Khloud is a functional snack, but it doesn’t taste like one.

When I first read the words protein and popcorn in the same sentence, I admit I was a little skeptical. Why ruin a good thing? Popcorn is a perfect food, in my opinion, and needs no tinkering.

Yet Khloé Kardashian brought us Khloud, a snack made for busy, protein-obsessed Americans. This popcorn promises seven grams of protein per serving thanks to something called Khloud Dust — that is, a trademarked blend of milk protein and seasoning. (For comparison, LesserEvil contains two grams of protein per serving and Smartfood contains three.)

To consider how Khloud might fit into your overall protein intake, The Institute of Medicine recommends anywhere from 50 to 175 grams of protein per day for a 2,000-calorie diet. But how much protein you really need varies based on your body weight, age and level of exercise. It’s also worth noting that most Americans already get enough protein (but most don’t get enough variety).

I tried all three flavors: Olive Oil and Sea Salt, Sweet and Salty Kettle Corn and White Cheddar. To my surprise, they tasted a lot better than many other health-conscious popcorn brands I’ve had.

All three flavors have a dry, somewhat powdery texture rather than a greasy one. There’s no excessive salt, cheese or oil that gets all over your fingers, which I really appreciate. Each flavor is enough to satisfy a craving without feeling indulgent. They’re maybe a bit bland, honestly, but they hit the spot. You can’t really tell Khloud is made with olive and coconut oils, which I think is a good thing. I’ve eaten other packaged popcorn that has a strong oil flavor, and it always reminds me that I’m missing out on butter.

If you need a fun and convenient way to sneak some more protein into your diet, Khloud might be worth a try. Seven grams is nowhere near that of a protein shake (which generally ranges from 25 to 40), but it’s about three times the amount of regular popcorn and the taste is comparable. Not bad, Khloé.
