I Tried the First Baja Blast Flavor Inspired by a Zodiac Sign, and Here's My Honest Review

If you’re a Leo, then I don’t need to tell you we’re in peak Leo season. If there’s one thing Leos love, it’s a bit of attention. This summer, iconic soda brand Mountain Dew is giving Leos just that with its very first flavor inspired by a zodiac sign. And, if you’re both a Leo and a Mountain Dew fan, you’ll be thrilled to know you’re getting your very own take on the brand’s beloved Baja Blast. Why so much Leo love? Debuting in 2004 as a Taco Bell exclusive, Baja Blast is also a Leo, and just celebrated its 22nd birthday on July 29.

What is Mountain Dew’s Baja Leo flavor?

Mountain Dew Baja Leo Zero Sugar is a limited-edition Baja Blast flavor coming out in single cans in August of 2026. The brand says it took inspiration from Leos' outgoing and spicy personalities when crafting the flavor, labeled “Spicy Mango Zest” on cans featuring a cosmic design. As a “Zero Sugar” flavor, it contains five calories and is sweetened with sucralose.

What does Mountain Dew Baja Leo Zero Sugar taste like?

The official flavor listed on the cans is Spicy Mango Zest. (I’ve personally never zested a mango, but maybe that’s just me). However, the flavor is more than just the sweet and spicy (or, as people are saying these days, “swicy”) combination which the brand toyed with before in its Baja Blast hot sauce. Mountain Dew describes Spicy Mango Zest as “bold, dramatic spiced mango up front with a chili-lime kick and a hint of black pepper on the finish.”

Here are all the elements — and traits that inspired them, according to the brand's announcement:

• Spiced Mango: "Ruled by the Sun," the taste is "golden, warm, and generous like a Leo. The flavor’s center of gravity."
• Black Pepper: Representing "the Lion," which is "calm, watching, unbothered — and then the bite. A Leo doesn’t strike on sight. It waits, because it can. And its presence is undeniable."
• Chili Lime: "The Heart and The Drama," this flavor is "bright, bold, a little dramatic — the confidence of a Leo that owns the room without asking for attention."

Mountain Dew sent me an early taste of Baja Leo to try and, to my palate, mango is definitely the star of the show. It’s juicy and fragrant, and slightly dry for a soda, to put it in wine terms. I didn’t get a ton of spice or much of that lingering black pepper finish I was promised, but the latter was detectable after a few more sips.

Overall, it's a refreshing and pleasantly palatable mango soda with some added complexity that’s worth a try. If that sounds like an overly diplomatic take, well, I guess I should disclose that I’m a Libra.

How to get Mountain Dew Baja Leo Zero Sugar Soda:

Mountain Dew Baja Leo Zero Sugar will drop via Mountain Dew’s TikTok shop on Wednesday, August 12 at 12 p.m. ET. According to a Mountain Dew spokesperson, a single can of Baja Blast Leo Zero Sugar will come as part of a bundle with a 12-pack of original Baja Blast for $8. Shipping is free, and the Leo cans will be available while supplies last.
