If you haven’t already heard, canned fish is sexy now. Excuse me, tinned fish, because doesn’t that sound so much more glamorous? While many say the renewed interest is a recession indicator, one thing’s for sure — sales for tinned fish are climbing.

Now, the popular salad chain Sweetgreen is partnering with Fishwife, the “affordable luxury” tinned fish brand.

What is Fishwife?

Fishwife is a sustainable tinned fish brand founded in 2020, known for its colorful, quirky packaging and TikTok virality. But this isn’t your grandpa’s tinned fish. The brand makes higher-end canned seafood like Sardines with Preserved Lemon, Mussels with Sweet Pepper + Garlic and Albacore Tuna in Spicy Olive Oil.

What’s on the Sweetgreen x Fishwife menu?

The collaboration includes two new salads:

  • Fishwife Summer Niçoise: A coastal spin on the classic French salad, including Spanish lemon albacore tuna, soft egg and a lemon-tarragon vinaigrette. (Full ingredients list: romaine, spring mix, summer vegetable medley, tomatoes, pickled onions, roasted sweet potatoes, crispy onions, egg, lemon tarragon vinaigrette and albacore tuna.)

  • Omega Glow: A rice bowl featuring miso-glazed salmon and Sweetgreen’s new miso sesame ginger. (Full ingredients list: romaine, white rice, miso-glazed salmon, corn salsa, carrots, cabbage, cilantro, almonds and miso sesame ginger dressing.)

When will the Sweetgreen x Fishwife menu be available?

The menu items will be available for a limited time starting on August 11. However, the new miso sesame ginger dressing will be a permanent addition to Sweetgreen’s menu.

My honest review of Sweetgreen x Fishwife’s new salads:

I tried the salads early as part of a press preview.

I’ll be the first to petition to add the Fishwife Summer Niçoise salad to Sweetgreen’s permanent menu. The tuna, while perfectly fine, was the least interesting thing about it. The sweet and tangy lemon-tarragon dressing was bursting with flavor, while the marinated red peppers and cooked green beans (part of the “vegetable medley”) made it feel like a true Mediterranean meal, not a quick lunch from an American bowl chain. My only complaint is the sweet potatoes: not only were they completely unnecessary, but since they’re seasoned with cumin and cayenne, they actively clashed with the salad’s flavor profile. Still, it’s the best and definitely the most sophisticated salad I’ve ever had from Sweetgreen.

While the Omega Glow was alright, it’s no match for the Niçoise. The miso sesame dressing was pretty standard, though I liked the Pacific, beachy vibe of the bowl. However, most of the ingredients are naturally dry, and my piece of salmon was, too. My single serving of dressing quickly disappeared into the salad, and I found it too basic to justify buying rather than making at home.
