Good news for those who are still mourning the loss of the late, lamented Choco Taco. The belovedly quirky taco-shaped ice cream treat — famously featuring a taco-shell-shaped waffle cone and light vanilla ice cream, partly coated in milk chocolate and peanuts — was discontinued by Klondike in 2022. That’s obviously not the good news.

The good news is that Salt & Straw — the Portland, Oregon-based artisanal ice cream company that teamed up with Taco Bell to introduce a Choco Taco-inspired treat, the Tacolate, last October — is bringing back that elevated take on the mainstream original in an entirely new form.

As summer lands its last licks, the Tacolate Milkshake is headed our way.

What is Salt & Straw's Tacolate Milkshake?

It’s a new, limited-edition frozen treat that Salt & Straw calls an “indulgent spin-off” of last year’s hit Tacolate.

The original Tacolate featured “cinnamon-ancho ice cream … packed into a hand-pressed, sog-resistant waffle cone taco, then dunked in dark chocolate and studded with crunchy puffed quinoa.” It was served with two drizzling sauces: Mango Jalapeño and Wildberry Cinnamon.

The Tacolate Milkshake blends Cinnamon Snickerdoodle ice cream; finishes it with a drizzle of chocolate, whipped cream and a dusting of “wildberry sugar”; and tops it all off with a jaunty Tacolate half.

When is the Tacolate Milkshake available at Salt & Straw?

The limited-edition treat will be available at Salt & Straw locations starting this Saturday, August 1, through Monday, September 7 (i.e., Labor Day), so basically the rest of the summer.

Is Salt & Straw doing anything else to celebrate the last weeks of summer?

Yes, the brand is bringing back its Summer Pies flavor series, featuring “five standout ice cream flavors” that turn “flaky crusts, jammy fillings and custardy centers into a suite of craveable scoops.”

This year’s lineup introduces a new flavor, Peaches and Cream Galette, which starts with fresh peach ice cream and adds “hunks of a rustic peach galette” and ribbons of peach pie filling.

The rest of the Summer Pie series includes …

  • Wild-Foraged Berry Slab Pie: a returning flavor featuring “wild berry pie filling and bits of double-baked pie crust folded into salted vanilla ice cream.”
  • Wildflower Honey and Lemon Chess Pie: “Cultured frozen yogurt studded with lemon chess pie, sweetened with wildflower honey and finished with a drizzle of housemade lemon curd.”
  • Gruyère and Tomato Custard Tart: “A savory Gruyère cheese and tomato jam tart, diced into bite-sized pieces and tossed into a salt and pepper custard ice cream.”
  • Coconut Cherry Pie with Almond Crust: A vegan flavor featuring “sour cherry pie filling and shortbread almond crust folded into coconut cream.”

When are the Summer Pie flavors available at Salt & Straw?

The series is available now through Thursday, August 27, at all local Salt & Straw scoop shops and via nationwide shipping.
