The FDA Recalled Over 167,000 Pounds of Meat

If you have pork, beef or goat sitting on a shelf in your refrigerator, you might want to think twice about eating it. Earlier this week there was a recall on meat, which the Food and Drug Administration classified as class I.

The FDA defines Class I as “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."

Why is the meat being recalled?

As of September 22, Star Meat Delivery Inc., located in Lucama, N.C., has recalled approximately 167,639 pounds of raw pork, beef and goat products.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), these meat products were produced without federal inspection, instead bearing labels with a false USDA mark of inspection.

“Food produced without inspection may contain undeclared allergens, harmful bacteria, or other contaminants that put consumer health and safety at risk,” the FSIS notice says.

Federal law requires all meat sold commercially to be inspected and passed by the FSIS to ensure that it is “safe, wholesome, and properly labeled.” The near-168,000 pounds of recalled meat did not undergo that inspection.

According to the FSIS statement, the raw pork, beef and goat items were produced on various dates prior to September 22 and were vacuum-sealed and packed into cardboard boxes for shipment.

Any product bearing the false establishment number “EST. 1363” should be considered misbranded and unsafe to eat. However, it's important to note that individual consumer packages may not have this label, as retail stores may have applied their own stickers with pricing and safe handling instructions.

Which meat is being recalled?

Now, it's not all meat that is being recalled. Only the following 23 products, distributed in bulk under the A&D Foods label, are subject to the recall:

Has anyone gotten sick from eating the recalled meat?

No, there have been no illnesses linked to the recall, according to the USDA. Still, people are encouraged to not consume the recalled meat.

What should you do if you have the recalled meat?

If you have the recalled meat in your fridge, the FSIS urges customers not to consume it, and for retailers and restaurants not to sell or serve these products. The meat should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
