Sunny Anderson is an Air Force veteran, a beloved radio host, a Food Network and culinary-world mainstay and the inventor of an inflatable snack stadium — but we’re here today not to revisit her résumé, but to shamelessly focus on her appearance. In our defense, Sunny considers tactical dressing part of her job — and that job involves both making fabulous entrances on shows like Beat Bobby Flay and reminding its eponymous chef who’s boss.

How laser-focused is she on that dual mission? Consider this 2015 throwback: a cute, graphic Zumiez top she matched to her makeup in Season 5’s third episode, when she’d served as a guest just a half-dozen times. “Thank you for wearing that blue eyeshadow!” Bobby said.

“Even though this is your funeral today, I wanted to bring some sunshine,” Sunny purred back.

More than a decade later, she’s maintained her stride, perfected the art of the trash-talk catwalk and earned a proper retrospective. Sunny Anderson, we love how you go big when you hit home.

Two years later (on Season 11’s dessert-based 10th episode), Sunny’s BURGER QUEEN sweatshirt was a non sequitur in the moment; where was the sweet shade one would expect for an ingredient like white chocolate and a signature dish like apple dumplings? This is where we begin to see her long game, friends. As she hosted The Kitchen’s Season 29 episode "Summer BBQ Finale" four years after that, she one-upped Bobby’s technique of topping burgers with potato chips by riffing on it in her own Spicy Green Goddess Burger recipe. She gave credit where credit was due in an Instagram post: “[J]ust know that I think when it comes to a burger, @BobbyFlay is correct as usual🙄, there's no more perfect match than tater chips on top of a burger, not alongside. No matter the burger type, I guarantee there's a chip to match!” Her take (with jalapeño kettle chips) is the ultimate, mind you.

Sunny knows well that the way to Bobby’s heart is through his cats, and she aimed for maximum distraction when she co-hosted Season 15’s sixth episode with Josh Capon. (True story: Nacho the Maine Coon was such a gargantuan beast that his photo on this custom tee is actually life-size.) Sadly, Bobby’s such a dyed-in-the-wool cat dad — who’s well-accustomed to companion animals making themselves at home on his counters — that Sunny’s heckle just lent him eye-of-the-tiger focus. At least she got a cute shirt out of it?

Speaking of fashion orbits, no survey of Sunny-style highlights would be comprehensive without a salute to the twin stars of Season 26, Episode 10 (the aptly titled “Too Fly for Flay”). Actor Nicole Ari Parker was then a boldface name for her work on Empire and about to make serious waves as the breakout style icon of HBO’s And Just Like That; she hit the kitchen in head-to-toe metallics. You’re going to want to zoom in on this shot, as Sunny went toe-to-toe with Nicole in custom Bobby-print boots (which she promptly propped up on the hosts’ table after leaning back in her chair).

Bobby tried to play it cool: “Once again, you bring the surprises to the show.”

Sunny did not. “Bobby,” she replied, “these boots were made for walking all over you.” (And so they did; challenger Jennifer Behm-Lazzarini kicked him to the curb with her chicken soup.)

By the time Season 18’s eighth episode rolled around, the fabulous gravitational pull of Sunny’s style had started pulling entire casts into its orbit. Fellow guest host Giada De Laurentiis donned Beat Bobby Flay sweatpants(!) for the occasion; pasta scion Francesco Buitoni arrived in a crown and scepter constructed of his family’s signature starches (which Sunny promptly stole); and his fellow challenger, Duskie Estes, took the stage in a WHO’S YOUR FARMER? tee. Sunny outdid them all in a tee covered with competitors who’d bested Bobby. “Yeah, this is my Sunny Loves Bobby (When He Loses) [shirt],” she told him.

“That’s a lot of effort right there,” Bobby noted.

“Giada’s wearing sweats! We ain’t playing around tonight, Bobby!” Sunny added. She had a message for Francesco when he advanced to face Bobby in the second round of competition: “I cannot wait to add you to my shirt.”

There’s a lot to unpack in how Sunny ran interference for Bobby’s opponents on Season 26’s “Friday Night Bites.” She and co-host Amanda Freitag burst into the kitchen through a BOBBY SLAYERS banner like a two-woman football team; she also sported football-themed leggings. We can likely all agree, however, that her most ruthless play was her custom-printed Alex Guarnaschelli-with-a-chef’s-knife tee; the image had a way of following one’s gaze around the arena, like a portrait in a haunted house. Again, Bobby tried to play it cool: “So, you have Alex on your shirt?”

“I know Amanda’s beat you, I know Alex Guarnaschelli’s beat you,” Sunny replied. “Intimidation is the name of the game, Bobby!” (This running pattern was a winner, and Mike Buttacavoli’s meatball Parmesan sandwich sent Bobby back to the bench.)

Sunny joined Brooklyn Beckham to host a British-invasion-themed assault on Bobby in the seventh episode of Season 30, and it seemed that her opening move was a diplomatic one. She sauntered over to visit and heckle him ever so gently as he prepped potato wedges for the fish and chips he’d pit against Scottish challenger Francis Legge: “I don’t know if you’re giving it to me, Bobby, right now with those … triangle pieces, but that’s OK, keep doing it, Bobby! Just know I love you, right, Bobby?”

“But Bobby, you know who I really love?” Sunny tore through her red tee with gusto that Superman would have approved and revealed another beneath it. “British invasion today, Bobby!”

Sunny then coached her relatively unseasoned co-host through how to prepare Roast Flay, a technique the young Brit practiced with due diligence — and victory was Francis Legge’s. Real talk, though: Bobby’s decision to make a panko crust with his batter didn’t do him any favors, either. Sunny: “It was an abomination over there!”

Not one to limit herself to in-studio sartorial statements, Sunny took her tees to Texas for the Season 5 opener of BBQ Brawl. She strove mightily to forestall the appearance of Bobby’s oh-so-predictable signature dish — and while she wasn’t successful (seriously, you’re not getting between that guy and his crispy rice), everyone saw the shade on that sunny Austin afternoon.

The price of freedom from crispy rice is eternal vigilance, and Sunny went back to her suitcase for another reminder that her BBQ Brawl rival was a one-trick pony. Was she ultimately able to curb those carbs? She was not. Did she and her team score spiritual (and actual) victories along the way? They did.

For an all-things-frosted battle on Beat Bobby Flay: Holiday Throwdown (Season 2’s fifth episode), Sunny fluttered into the kitchen as a sparkling, blinged-out snowflake: “What up, Bobby? Feeling icy? How are you?”

“You look fabulous,” he replied.

Sunny stopped, collaborated and listened. “What? Say it louder, Bobby.”

“FABULOUS! You know, [with] the ice queen thing, it’s hard for me to kind of get into it with you,” Bobby continued. “Because you’re so warm usually!”

She corrected that weather report. “Bobby, just because my name is Sunny doesn’t mean THIS ISN’T MY HOUSE.”

Inspired by challenger Francisco Higareda (who played professional basketball after culinary school and helped his team win a national championship in Mexico), Sunny turned up for Season 36’s ninth episode in Jeremy Scott’s shoe-print Adidas hoodie and joggers, plus — yeah, yeah, they aren’t visible in this shot but they're that good — Scott’s Adidas Originals Shark collab. As co-host Jenna Elfman chatted about the benefits of flexibility and reinvention, “I’m opening myself up to beating Bobby Flay tonight,” Sunny announced.

“Yes, you are,” Bobby said. “And you keep reinventing yourself; you have a different wig on every week!” This one really drove home the perils of heckling an agile woman in athleisure and comfortable shoes.

For Beat Bobby Flay: Holiday Throwdown Season 3's tribute to global holiday markets, Sunny put a glistening '70s spin on a traditional Christmas tree and collected her equally traditional praise from Bobby, who noted (correctly) that she looked amazing. “Can I be nasty?” she mused. “It’s Christmastime!” Pro that she is, that was a rhetorical question, and her face clouded over above her impeccable dress. “I want you to go down, Bobby,” she said. “I’m here for the redemption.”

“I don’t want you to beat me; it’s all about me,” he Grinched.

“It’s going to happen!” Sunny insisted. “It’s a wrap!”

Bobby had the nerve to win every single episode of Beat Bobby Flay: Holiday Throwdown in Season 3, and when the second episode of Season 4 rolled around, Sunny summoned every ill-advised craft technique and awkward photo of Bobby at her disposal to create the ugly-holiday-sweater equivalent of turducken. Its aesthetic tryptophan wasn’t nearly powerful enough to vanquish the third-round, one-two visual punch of Bobby and his teammate Jet Tila — who mimicked his tight, turkey-brown button-up, jeans cuffed to reveal a pale flash of bare ankle, sneakers and awkward finger-snapping — but it left us breathless for (and, if we’re being honest, a little concerned about) how Sunny might level up next time around.

A formidable Louisiana crew featuring challengers Chris Vazquez and Eric Cook, plus co-host Punkie Johnson, joined Sunny to be the ruin of Bobby Flay in a Big Easy-themed battle for Season 38’s 11th episode. Chris and Eric turned the canes, masks and boas over to the hosts before settling down to cook — open flames plus feathers weren’t on anyone’s menu, thanks — and Punkie and Sunny seized the opportunity to “Mardi Gras vibe it up.” This Sisterhood of the Traveling Props wasn’t nearly enough to secure a win, but it did yield the hard-to-unsee image of Bobby trying to cook while sort of tied up in boas?

When designer Nina Parker joined Sunny at the hosting table for Season 40’s third episode, it went without saying that they’d both be dressed to kill. “I love the outfits tonight, man,” Bobby told them both. “You guys look great!”

“This is Nina Parker Collection, thank you very much,” Nina replied.

“This is Nina Parker Collection, thank you very much,” Sunny said of her own look, “but not this [top layer]; this is just a little thing I put on top because you can’t handle my curves, Bobby.”

“Yes, I can,” Bobby contended.

“No, you can’t!” Sunny shot back.

Nina looked between them. “I can leave!”

“This relationship’s been going on for decades,” Bobby explained.
