Gingerbread

Ingredients

2/3 cup shortening or 5 1/3 ounces butter

1/2 cup packed brown sugar

2 teaspoons ginger, finely grated

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon cloves

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1 egg

3/4 cup molasses

3 cups sifted flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl cream together, the shortening, brown sugar, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, salt, until light and fluffy. Next mix in the egg and molasses until well combined. In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and blend until well incorporated. Cover and refrigerate dough for at least 30 minutes before using. Cut cookies into the shape of you choice and bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Serve warm or at room temperature.
