B. Smith's Sugar Cookies

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, at room temperature

1 cup sugar

2 large egg yolks

3 1/4 teaspoons vanilla

2 3/4 teaspoons heavy cream

2 cups presifted bleached flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

Shortening, for greasing baking sheets


  1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg yolks, and beat well. Mix in vanilla and heavy cream, combine well. Over a sheet of waxed paper, sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add flour mixture to butter mixture until well blended. Cover the dough with plastic wrap. Chill for several hours. Grease 2 baking sheets. Place 1 oven rack in the lower third of the oven, another in the upper third. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. On a floured board, roll out dough to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters, and place on baking sheets. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 to 12 minutes, or until cookies are lightly golden brown.;
