Give your campfire hot dogs a fun twist by wrapping them in pizza dough for a chewy, golden crust that turns a simple classic into something special. Cooking over a live fire adds smoky flavor but remember: campfire heat is unpredictable. Keep an eye on your dogs, rotate them often and adjust your distance from the embers so the dough puffs and browns evenly. Once they’re cooked, brush with melted butter, sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning and serve with ketchup and mustard for the ultimate savory fireside treat.

Ingredients

Directions

Special equipment:
extendable hot dog sticks
  1. Prepare a campfire and wait until the wood has become mostly hot, ash-covered embers with some orange showing through. (There should still be some flames; you just won’t be cooking over them.)
  2. Skewer a hot dog on a stick or extendable hot dog stick – make sure the hot dog is pushed down enough on the stick that it holds firmly without flopping around. Pull off a 2- to 3-ounce piece of pizza dough (no need to measure; the right size piece will fit nicely in your palm as a rough guide). Roll the dough into a 12-inch snake. Starting at the bottom of the hot dog, wrap the dough around in a spiral, almost covering the whole hot dog. Pinch both ends to seal the dough together and lightly pat it around the hot dog so it adheres.
  3. Find a spot where you can hold your hand about 6 inches over the heat for 4 to 5 seconds. Cook the hot dog over this spot, turning frequently and adjusting your distance from the fire if it starts burning or is cooking too slowly. The dough should puff, brown and cook through in 6 to 8 minutes, depending on the heat of your fire and type of pizza dough used.
  4. While still hot, brush the dough with melted butter and sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning. Serve with ketchup and mustard. Repeat with the remaining hot dogs and dough.
