This tiramisu-inspired affogato turns two classic Italian desserts into a single quick, elegant treat. Creamy vanilla gelato is topped with hot espresso and finished with homemade mascarpone crema. The two classics come together in one perfect dessert with the delicious flavors and textures of both. It’s rich, lightly bitter and perfectly balanced, ideal for an effortless treat when you want something indulgent but simple.

Ingredients

Mascarpone Crema:

Affogato:

Directions

  1. For the mascarpone crema: Add egg yolks and 1 1/2 tablespoons of the sugar to the top of a double boiler set over simmering water. Cook, whisking constantly, until the mixture thickens, becomes pale and the sugar dissolves, about 4 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Beat the mascarpone, heavy cream, remaining 1 tablespoon sugar and vanilla in the bowl of an electric mixer on medium-high speed until fluffy and it holds soft peaks, about 2 minutes. Add the egg mixture and beat another 2 minutes to combine and ensure that the crema is nice and fluffy.
  3. For the affogato: Combine the cocoa powder and espresso powder in a small bowl and set aside.
  4. Divide the gelato between 2 coffee cups, then pour a shot of espresso into each. Top with a dollop of mascarpone crema, shave bittersweet chocolate over the top and dust with the cocoa and espresso mixture.
