How to Soften Cream Cheese

There are three easy methods for softening cream cheese: on the countertop, in the microwave and in warm water.

Softening Cream Cheese on the Countertop

The easiest, best and most popular way to soften cream cheese is the countertop method. Remove the cream cheese from the package and leave it on your kitchen countertop at room temperature, anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. To shorten the process time to 10 to 15 minutes, cut the cream cheese into small cubes.

Softening Cream Cheese In the Microwave

The quickest way to soften cream cheese is in the microwave, which takes approximately one minute. Take the product completely out of the packaging and place it in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave the cheese on low for 30 seconds, stir the product and then repeat as needed until it reaches the desired consistency. “Use a low vs. high setting, as microwaving cream cheese on high for longer than one minute can melt and even burn your cheese,” say the experts at Cabot Creamery.
