Simple maple butter transforms ordinary bread into a crunchy decadent treat that’s the ultimate crunchy spin on classic French toast. A blend of warm spices, rich maple syrup and creamy butter come together to create an irresistible caramelized topping, offering the perfect balance of sweet, spicy and comforting flavors. It’s ideal for a quick breakfast, but equally appropriate for an indulgent snack or cozy dessert — especially when it’s topped with a scoop of butter pecan ice cream.

Ingredients

Directions

Special equipment:
a 6-quart air fryer, optional
  1. Beat together the butter, brown sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon, ginger, salt, nutmeg and allspice with an electric mixer or stand mixer on medium-high speed until combined. Spread a thin layer of the spiced butter on each slice of bread, covering all sides of the bread completely.
  2. Set a cooling rack over a baking sheet. Working in batches of 2 slices, place the bread into a 6-quart air fryer and cook at 320 degrees F, flipping halfway through, until dark golden brown, about 18 minutes (see Cook’s Note). Remove the toasts to the cooling rack to cool for 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Top the warm toast with a scoop of ice cream if desired and a drizzle of maple syrup. Serve immediately.

Cook’s Note

Settings may vary on your air fryer depending on the model. Please refer to the manufacturer’s guide. If you don’t have an air fryer, you can bake the toast in the oven at 450 degrees F, flipping halfway through, until dark golden brown, about 14 minutes.
