This festive cocktail combines the flavors of two classics. Spiced red wine syrup is made by reducing red wine with orange, brown sugar, cinnamon and star anise. The syrup is then combined with bourbon and bitters in an ice-filled glass, with an orange peel to finish.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Make the wine syrup: Bring the orange zest and juice, wine, brown sugar, cinnamon sticks and star anise to a boil in a small saucepan. Lower the heat and simmer, stirring, until the mixture is reduced by one-third, about 15 minutes. Let cool to room temperature, then strain the syrup and refrigerate.
  2. Make the cocktail: Combine the bitters and 1 ounce of the wine syrup in a glass; stir. Fill with ice and stir in the bourbon to chill.
  3. Strain the drink into a lowball glass filled with 1 large ice cube. Twist the remaining orange strip over the glass to release the citrus oils, then add as a garnish.
