Enjoying the snap of a perfectly cooked and juicy hot dog isn’t barbecue weather dependent. Baking them in the oven gives you the ability to quickly cook for a crowd (or even just one!) and with less mess. Scoring the hot dogs allows for even heat throughout (no bursting) and creates deliciously caramelized edges. Bonus: The opening becomes the perfect hollow for your toppings of choice.
NEW: You can now switch to Cook Mode to keep your screen awake.
Directions
Position oven racks in the middle and lower third of the oven and preheat to 450 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
Using a paring knife, carefully slice the hotdogs lengthwise from end to end, cutting only just below the casing. Arrange the hot dogs scored-side up on the foil with room between each to allow heat to circulate. Open the buns and place them cut-side up on a separate baking sheet; set aside.
Bake the hot dogs on the middle rack for about 10 minutes, then shake the baking sheet gently to allow the hot dogs to shift slightly. Put the baking sheet with the buns on the lower oven rack. Continue to bake until the hot dogs are plump and caramelized and the edges begin to crisp and the buns are warm and lightly toasted, about 5 minutes more.
Serve with toppings of choice.
