Sixteen of the country's best amateur cooks arrive in New York for their chance at $50,000 and the title of America's Best Cook. But first, they must compete to represent their region, in one of two spots on a Superstar Chef Mentor's team. Iron Chef Michael Symon will be choosing from the North, Iron Chef Cat Cora takes the South, Iron Chef Alex Guarnaschelli is heading up the East and Food Network star Chef Tyler Florence is representing the West. The Mentors will be choosing wisely, as they will also be out of the competition if both of their cooks are eliminated.

In the first match, reality star Johnny Bananas won't shut up about lasting longer than fellow TV competitor Mark Long on Worst Cooks in America, and with the help of legendary chefs Maneet Chauhan and Stephanie Izard, the two go head-to-head making a fine dining dish. In the second match, classically trained chef Michael Hung calls out self-taught chef and restaurateur Chris Oh for bad-mouthing him around LA. Judges Jet Tila and Tiffani Faison make the call on which bro is the better chef.
In a special two hour premiere episode of The Next Food Network Star, twelve hopefuls arrive in Los Angeles to compete for the ultimate dream job: To host their own show on The Food Network. The competition starts right away as they face their first on-camera test: preparing a meal that best represents who they are. Next, the finalists are taken to Paramount Studios where an A-list Hollywood Director films 30-second promos for the show that each finalist wants to host. Finally, the finalists must each create a Power Lunch for LA's biggest celebrity Chef, Wolfgang Puck.

Sunny also makes a T-Bone Steak with an "Any Herb" sauce, and Kansas City pitmasters Jason and Megan Day drop by to make a BBQ-inspired Potato Salad. For dessert, it's a head-to-head Sundae Sauce-off with Katie's Roasted Peach Sauce and Geoffrey's Boozy Chocolate Sauce.
