It all started at a diner. My best friend ordered a chocolate milkshake and a side of fries to share — a classic diner order. As we proceeded to talk about the latest episode of Pretty Little Liars over our food, she did something insane. She dipped her French fry right into her shake and ate it! I know this combo has been around for ages, but I had only ever heard about it. I had never witnessed it in real life.

I considered the fry-in-milkshake thing a food faux pas; my best friend considered it a diner rite of passage. And, just like that the pressure for me to try it was on. As I sat there in that worn-out leather booth, holding a beautifully crisp fry covered in a silky chocolate layer, I cringed. How on earth was this going to taste good?

As I’m sure you’ve probably guessed, I was so wrong. It was delicious. The saltiness of the fry, the bitterness of the chocolate, the richness of the cold, creamy milkshake — it was the best of both worlds. I realized in that moment that I would never have to choose between sweet and salty again. (From then on, it was chocolate-covered pretzels and salted caramel for me!)

Are your taste buds tingling yet? If so, you’ll love these other salted-chocolate treats. They’re just as good as that first milkshake-dipped French fry!
