If I’ve learned anything from TikTok this past year, it’s that it is chock-full of culinary discoveries like this one: cucumbers + sugar = watermelon. Yes, that’s right. TikToker’s everywhere have been going crazy over sliced cucumbers with a sprinkle of sugar on them.
Apparently, this unlikely combination (when eaten together) creates a flavor that’s a lot like watermelon. And, while it’s easy to be completely blown away by this pairing, it makes sense when you think about it. Cucumbers are actually a fruit — and they belong to the same family as watermelon. Aside from their size and the thickness of their outer rind, one of the main differences between the two is the level of sweetness. Cucumbers are mild and refreshing, watermelons are much sweeter. It’s almost like cucumbers are tiny, sugarless watermelons. Think about that!
