“Sometimes you need to eat an entire cucumber.” Whether you’ve experienced that feeling or not, truer words have seldom been spoken. And in the case of cucumber-obsessed TikToker and YouTuber Logan Moffitt, those words are spoken at the beginning of each of his now-viral recipe videos involving his favorite vegetable-that’s-technically-a-fruit.

Moffitt, a 23-year-old Ottawa resident whose TikTok account focusing on (largely) Korean-inspired recipes has 4.8 million followers, has seen a recent bump in views due to a series of cucumber salad tutorials. The general formula involves Moffitt slicing an entire English cucumber into a quart-sized food storage container, adding dressing ingredients, then sealing and shaking up the salad to coat everything before diving in with a pair of chopsticks to devour the whole batch. Sometimes, he even slurps the last of the dressing and cucumber water with a straw.

Since posting the first “eat an entire cucumber” video in early July of 2024, Moffitt’s cucumber content alone has racked up nearly 300 million views on TikTok alone, plus more on Instagram.

“I think the reason behind the interest in cucumber these days truly comes from how delicious and refreshing they are,” Moffitt told me via email. “So many flavors go with them making the salad opportunities endless and easy for a variety of foodies.”

Proving his point, Moffit has since posted variations on the shaken salad that incorporate flavors from kimchi, sushi, peanut sauce, everything bagel with lox, tajín and lime, and even a version incorporating Chipotle burrito ingredients. He has also recorded recipe tutorials while swimming, posted a video of himself eating cucumber while jetskiing, and tried “cucumber cereal,” a take on oi naengguk, a Korean cold cucumber soup.

As for technique, making so many salads does provide Moffitt with some expertise on how to achieve the ideal texture. In his videos, Moffitt says thorough shaking is key, usually for about one minute. While he does advise that you can let the salad marinate before serving, often Moffitt will eat the salad immediately to keep things crunchy. “I usually use a mandolin setting [of] 2, it’s the perfect thickness that’s easy to chew, but still really crunchy,” he said. “You can eat multiple [slices] at a time which is really satisfying. Sliced cucumber will always be a winner to me.”

And while it makes perfect sense to eat a sweet and spicy cucumber salad with chopsticks, Moffitt explained that the utensils have become his go-to. “I used them for the first cucumber salad video I made because it was [...] basically a Korean cucumber side dish, so it only felt right. But now for these cucumber salads I just gravitate to chopsticks out of habit.”

If it sounds like Moffitt eats a lot of cucumbers, well, let’s put it this way: In a recent video showcasing his Instacart grocery order haul, he produced no fewer than 15 English cucumbers from the box.

“Thankfully cucumbers are typically pretty inexpensive,” Moffit said, adding that, “I do spend a lot on cucumbers, however.”
