In the season five premiere of The Next Food Network Star, the 10 finalists are immediately thrown into their first challenge. They head to Food Network Kitchens and are greeted by the selection committee (Iron Chef Bobby Flay and Food Network executives Bob Tuschman and Susie Fogelson), who inform the finalists that they’ll be split into two teams and catering Food Network’s "Sweet 16" party.   The teams are tasked with creating delicious dishes and serving tables packed with Food Network stars like Giada De Laurentiis, Alton Brown, Duff Goldman, Sunny Anderson and Masaharu Morimoto, and also Access Hollywood co-host Nancy O’Dell! The first finalist is then eliminated.

Athletes aren't the only ones competing in epic international games this year. Guy Fieri invites eight all-star masters of world cuisines to compete in a five-part GGG Global Games for a $50,000 grand prize! After dividing the chefs into two groups, Guy asks Group A to make their best international street food that must also include a Red Torch Special: pumpernickel bread. Then, the two least successful chefs battle for survival, making their best rice dish using 10 ingredients or less. One chef moves on, the other leaves the Games.

Guy Fieri brings back three pairs of rival chefs who previously faced off one-on-one. First, two budget-brawlers settle the score in a round that has them shopping for ingredients under $5 for their family dinners. Next, a couple of food scientists face-off in a game that forces them to shop for their dishes in either the odd or even aisles. The final round brings back two Flavortown all-stars for an exact recreation of their first matchup. The winner of each round wins ultimate bragging rights and a guaranteed $5,000.

There's romance in the air in the Chopped Kitchen as eight cooking singles are paired up on blind dates! In the first round, the couples get to know each other and the ingredients, which include scallops in the shell and a strange citrus. The six competitors left for round two all decide to grind the protein in the entree basket, and the minimal use of one of the ingredients gives the judges something to discuss. Then, the creme anglaise in the dessert basket seems like a gift for the final two pairs, but neither team makes a dash for the ice cream machine.
