#5: Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip — Graeter’s
Graeter’s in Cincinnati is home to the world’s only French Pot Freezer. This old-fashioned machinery, plus the 18 percent butterfat content, makes their signature Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream dense and delicious — along with the combination of fresh black raspberry puree and bittersweet dark chocolate that’s drizzled into the creamy, custard-like base.
#4: Secret Breakfast — Humphry Slocombe
San Francisco’s Humphry Slocombe blazes a trail with unique flavors, and customers can’t get enough of Secret Breakfast. The best-selling flavor combines both childhood and adult favorites: cornflakes and bourbon. Once the cornflakes are baked into a crispy cookie, they are folded into a rich ice cream base infused with vanilla bean pods and bourbon.
#3: Mt. Vesuvius — The Franklin Fountain
Order the Mt. Vesuvius at The Franklin Fountain in Philadelphia and you’ll have an old-fashioned sundae that matches the parlor’s 19th-century decor. Co-owners Ryan and Eric Berley stick to the classic ingredients, serving homemade vanilla ice cream with volcanic-inspired toppings: housemade hot fudge for the lava, crunchy malt powder for the ash and fresh whipped cream for the cloud garnish.
#2: Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper — Salt & Straw
“Farm to cone” is the motto at Portland’s Salt & Straw, where cousins and co-owners Tyler and Kim Malek are serving up seasonally inspired flavors. Most popular is their Strawberry Honey Balsamic with Black Pepper, loaded with freshly roasted strawberries, balsamic vinegar and black pepper. Before the dense and almost butter-like ice cream is finished, lots of homemade strawberry jam is layered in by hand.
#1: It Came From Gowanus — Ample Hills Creamery
At Brooklyn’s Ample Hills Creamery, you can get frighteningly delicious and creative ice cream flavors like the most-popular one, It Came From Gowanus. Owner Brian Smith, a former monster-movie screenplay writer, uses only locally produced ingredients when making his salted chocolate ice cream. He loads his decadent base with chunks of homemade hazelnut crack cookies and orange-scented brownies.
