How You Can Recreate the Hamptons Sandwich TikTok Can’t Stop Talking About
The biscuit, egg and cheese from the Sagaponack General Store is the viral bite of the summer — and you don’t need to travel for a taste.

Most of us aren’t spending the summer in the Hamptons, the famous (and notorious) playground for the ultra-rich. Surprisingly, though, locals and visitors agree that a highlight of this season is a humble breakfast sandwich from a near 150-year-old store.
Sagaponack General Store first opened in 1878. It closed in 2020, but Mindy Gray, wife of president and COO of asset management firm Blackstone Jon Gray, bought it. She’s spent the past few years painstakingly restoring historic details in a multimillion-dollar renovation. The store reopened in April and now serves prepared foods, coffee and baked goods alongside local produce, flowers and pantry items.
The store is pricey — its hoodies cost $159, for example. Some people compare it to Erewhon. However, TikTok reviewers say its lattes are a steal at $5 a pop, and its breakfast sandwiches are the talk of the town.
“We’re calling it now: This is the ‘it’ spot of the Hamptons this summer,” the TikTok creators behind @sistersnacking say in their review. “It also happens to be making one of the best breakfast sandwiches we’ve ever had.”
It’s a straightforward dish: a souffle-style egg with melted Cabot sharp cheddar on a buttermilk biscuit. The biscuit is a little bit crunchy, a little bit sweet and topped with flaky salt. You can add ham, bacon or sausage if you want (if you arrive before the store runs out), but many reviewers say it’s unnecessary since the filling is already so rich and buttery. A plain Egg & Cheese Biscuit costs $13.

“The sandwich has been a featured part of the General Store since opening day,” Gray says. “I am thrilled that it’s bringing morning smiles and happy stomachs to Sagaponack.”

“The souffle egg layer is soft, eggy, thick and delicious,” says recipe developer Andy Liang. “In my restaurant days, the eggs were blended and baked or steamed, covered with foil in the Combi oven low and slow. Cut into squares or to the size of their biscuits.”
He and lead recipe developer Amanda Neal recommend following this method to make the eggs — just whisk them together before adding to the Instant Pot. For the biscuits, you can’t go wrong with the test kitchen’s tried-and-true recipe.
