You might call us connoisseurs.

For my family of four, I’m always on the lookout for more protein-dense options especially when it comes to snacks. Luckily, more and more protein-packed snacks are lining grocery store aisles.
Our family cycles through a lot of snacks. My kids must pack one for school every single day, and I often find myself reaching for something salty in the afternoon. Our favorite snack across the board is pretzels, and we love sampling them all – sourdough, peanut butter-filled, flat, you name it.
Given the family propensity for this crunchy snack, I wanted to investigate whether any of the protein-forward options might be a good swap-in for taste, texture and satiety. Here are our favorites.
These were our favorite texture and flavors of the protein-forward group. Dill Pickle and Garlic Parmesan were the hits followed by Honey Mustard and Sea Salt. Each serving of about 22 pieces contains nine grams of protein. Since these are not billed as low-carb options, the texture is more like a classic pretzel thanks to whole-grain wheat flower, wheat protein isolate and chickpea protein.
BeyondTwistz are part of branded batch of snacks and bread that have are Keto-focused. These babies have two grams net carbs and 18 grams of plant-based protein per 17-pretzel serving. Ingredients include wheat protein isolate, pea protein and sunflower oil. We enjoyed the family-size resealable packaging and while the classic Salty Good wasn’t a favorite, the Sunny Mustard and Cheesy Street (Cheddar and sour cream) were hits. They have four additional options to choose from: Sunny Mustard, Garlic Butter, Mexicali and Sour Cream & Onion.
It might not be fair to compare a gluten-free peanut butter pretzel to the rest of the pack, but we loved these cassava and chickpea flour-based peanut butter pretzels that have about three grams of protein per 15 pieces. While they aren’t a “protein-pretzel,” they are a grain-free option that stands up to the larger pretzel taste test. They have classic twists as well in flavors like Chile lime and everything bagel.
While we didn’t love the texture compared other options, one bag left us feeling quite full thanks to 28 grams of protein per bag. In addition to a classic sea salt, there are Sesame, Everything, Cheddar and Flamin’ Crunch varieties. Such a crunchy bite will benefit from being dipped! The ingredients list is lengthy, though, and might not be for everyone: Hydrolyzed wheat protein, Dextrin fiber (maize), Carob seed protein, Soy protein isolate, Hydrogenated coconut oil, Sea salt, Barley malt extract, Paprika, Soy lecithin, Wheat gluten, Cornstarch, Monk's fruit concentrate, Leavening (Sodium bicarbonate, Sodium pyrophosphate), Rosemary extract, Sodium hydroxide.
