Get to Know W.I.S.C., the Cheeky AI Host of 'Super Mega Cakes'

Positioned at the heart of the Super Mega Cakes kitchen, computer host W.I.S.C. is the first of her kind on Food Network. Not only is she quick to spit out cake design data and baking show analytics, she’s dishing up a saucy personality and lots of funny banter. Who Is W.I.S.C.?

Equipped with flashing lights and an inviting, yet robotic voice, W.I.S.C. is Food Network's first super-computer host. Just like any other host, she introduces the competitors, explains the challenges and banters with her human counterpart, Duff.

"We were inspired by the zeitgeist," says Patty Suh, vice president of development + programming for Food Network. "AI is at the forefront of conversations everywhere. It’s already present in our day-to-day lives with devices like Siri, Alexa, etc."

What Does W.I.S.C. Stand For?

W.I.S.C. is an acronym that stands for "Witty Intelligent Super Computer" — and if you've seen the show, you know W.I.S.C. lives up to her name. She's known to tease Duff. She also uses her AI superpowers to spread nice-to-know facts. Case in point: She sifted through 273,991 hours of Food Network programming and determined viewers prefer themed competitions.

“The name came from one of the (human) writers on the production team," says Patty. "We wanted to give W.I.S.C. a personality — witty, cheeky, funny. Having a callback to something culinary was an added bonus."

Is W.I.S.C. Like Other Food Network Hosts?

Although she may not have human eyes or taste buds to judge the competition, she does have the ability to analyze millions of recipes and cake designs in less than a minute, giving her an unmatched level of expertise.

“This show really centers around Duff, who is competing against all six challenging teams at once. However, we knew how busy he would be juggling all six cakes and managing his teams. We knew we needed someone, or in this case something, to pick up some hosting responsibilities,” Patty says. "We also wanted this host to feel omnipresent because there’s so much simultaneous action happening. We decided on W.I.S.C. — our AI super-cake computer that can ‘see’ and ‘hear’ but not ‘taste!’ all the action over the course of the competition."
