Oreo Is Taking the Sugar Out of Its Cookies
Here’s what’s replacing it.

Oreo is one of those brands that’s so iconic, it pretty much has no competition. Sure, there are other chocolate and creme sandwich cookies out there on grocery store shelves, but when you want an Oreo, you pretty much only want the real deal.
However, an exception to that craving might need to be made for those snackers who are required to be careful about their sugar intake. For certain diabetics and other sugar-conscious consumers, a handful of substitute products have popped up to fill the Oreo-shaped void in that particular market. But today, Oreo announced that it is releasing a new version of its beloved black and white cookie that’s totally sugar-free.

“We know that many consumers are seeking ways to reduce their sugar intake and are looking for choice when it comes to snacking options,” said Michelle Deignan, VP of Oreo. “‘Oreo Zero Sugar’ delivers on the authentic Oreo cookie experience and ritual that our fans know and love, while addressing an unmet need in the snack aisle.”
What replaces the sugar in Oreo Zero Sugar cookies?
Oreo Zero Sugar, in both Original and Double Stuf varieties, is coming to stores next month. Of course, we all know Oreo is a sweet treat, so what is replacing the usual sugar? According to Oreo, the new cookies are “sweetened with maltitol, polydextrose, sucralose, [and] ace-k,” but that Oreo Zero Sugar still “delivers a 100% authentic Oreo experience and ritual that fans love, proving that you don’t have to compromise on deliciousness, even in a zero-sugar format.”
Another revision to these Oreo cookies will be in their packaging. In addition to slightly altered blue and black labels highlighting the Zero Sugar aspect, they are also going to be put into pantry-friendly standing pouches. And rather than the familiar rows of loose cookies in a tray accessed by a peel-open panel you get with regular Oreos packs, these pouches will contain ten sleeves of cookies paired in twos. In other words, ten individually-packed servings per container.
