Lately, I've relied heavily on the comfort of a warm cup of coffee. It wakes me up in the morning while simultaneously encouraging me to lay in bed a few minutes longer, scanning the news or squeezing in another chapter of a book before starting my day. It gives me something to sip during morning meetings or while I sift through emails. It's coffee, after all — we all love it. But, I think we can all agree that there is nothing sadder than setting down your mug of morning Joe, only to find it an hour later, lukewarm and lacking luster.

So, naturally, the concept of Ember — a mug that maintains an optimal temperature from first sip to last (and is controlled by an easily downloadable app) — made my coffee-loving heart leap. The only thing that could make it better was if it donned the same animated picture of my beloved King Charles Cavalier that my previous mug (now, unfortunately, replaced) has.

Nonetheless, I was dying to try it. And let me first start by saying that this thing really works. I don’t even remember what it’s like to pick up a mug and gulp cold coffee, but it sounds miserable. Now, I can leave for a meeting and come back to my drink at an optimal 143 degrees — a temperature I set based on my own personal preference.

Once my coffee is finished, I typically switch to tea throughout the day. There is something so satisfying about filling my cup up with steaming hot water and getting a notification just moments later when my drink has finally reached optimal temperature. Plus, the tea timer ensures I am steeping my drink for the correct amount of time.

My only slight grievance, which, based on quickly browsing reviews, seems to be a widespread opinion, is that the charge doesn’t last as long as I would like. When at full capacity, the battery will get you about an hour of a perfectly warm beverage before it starts cooling down. But, if you're using it at your desk like I do, this problem is easily remedied by the fact that the charge will last all day if you keep it on the charging coaster.

Sure, slightly cold coffee or too-hot tea isn't a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, and $110 is a bit steep for a mug. But, having a guarantee that my drink will stay at my preferred temperature all day brings me joy that cannot be replaced.
