On the list of food hacks we wish we knew sooner, the best way to soften butter is high up there. Whether you’re spreading it over an ear of corn in the summer or a freshly baked potato for dinner, you might think the only solution is letting the butter sit until it reaches the perfect temperature. But we’re happy to report that this simple gadget, which runs for just under $15 at Amazon, gets the job done in a flash.
The ribbon dispenser functions as the name suggests. You simply place a stick of cold butter in the dispenser, twist the back attachment, and it scrapes thin ribbons of butter out onto your food with ease. We tested it out on some of our favorite foods, including a piece of cinnamon raisin toast, and were impressed with how evenly it coated the bread.
We found the best results worked after letting the butter sit for a few minutes before spreading or running the butter-filled dispenser under warm water. But reviewers claim that it can be used on butter that isn’t fully softened and will still spread cold butter.

It’s dishwasher-safe so you don’t have to worry about handwashing it up between sticks of butter. Plus, the company claims it can also be filled with margarine or cream cheese for easy spreading. Whether you’re looking for the best way to evenly coat your toast in the morning or want to add some fun to the dinner table, this dispenser is worth adding to your cart.
