This Clever Gadget Solves One of Our Biggest Holiday Headaches
Finally, Brach’s has the tool candy cane fans need.

Even among twinkly lights and ornaments, candy canes are a colorful standout hanging from the boughs of an evergreen. But as any fan knows, in order to spend the entire holiday season looking good without going stale, these treats are sealed in a thin, clear plastic wrapping that can be frustrating to tear open and peel off. (And sometimes you might accidentally crack the candy cane in the process or, even more tragically, find the candy cane was cracked to begin with.) This year, however, the candy cane makers at Brach’s hope to help you enjoy your candy canes faster and more easily with a new device: the Brach’s Cane Opener.
Consumer comments and social media hacks for opening candy canes inspired the idea for designing a bespoke opener, according to Kelly Peyser, Director of Brach’s and Seasonal Marketing at Ferrara Candy Company.
“Brach’s Candy Canes have been a seasonal staple at the heart of holiday traditions for nearly a century. But we know candy canes can be tricky to open,” Peyser says in a press release.
How does the Brach’s Cane Opener work?
All you have to do is insert the straight end of the candy cane into the device — sort of like a pencil sharpener — to assist you with easy wrapper removal.
“The patent pending Brach’s Cane Opener utilizes a simple cutting mechanism via a food-safe, spring-loaded pin that cuts the wrapper once inserted,” Kelly Peyser, Director of Brach’s and Seasonal Marketing at Ferrara Candy Company, explains.
And, to keep it handy, you can hang it right on your tree as an ornament.
Is there a right way to eat a candy cane?
Because the Brach’s Cane Opener is designed to open the longer end of the candy cane, it begs the question: Is there a “right” way to eat one?
“As long as you’re enjoying the peppermint goodness, we say there is no wrong way,” Peyser tells Food Network. “We know the majority of Americans start with the straight end, but we also have love for folks who start with the hook or break theirs into pieces to enjoy that first crunchy bite.”
Of course, this still doesn’t solve the cracked cane issue, but Brach’s says the best solution for an unfortunately fractured candy cane is to “just eat it,” adding, “candy cane pieces are perfect for stirring into hot cocoa, sprinkling on cookies, or sneaking a quick bite before anyone notices.”
