You could argue that rum and Coke is one of the easiest drinks in the world to make: You take some rum. You add some Coke. How could it be any simpler?
How about this recipe: Open a can.
Coca-Cola and Bacardi just announced that they’re teaming up to release rum and Coke as a ready-to-drink, premixed cocktail. The convenient cocktail will come in a can co-branded with both the Bacardi and Coca-Cola logos.
Clocking in at 5.9 percent alcohol by volume (note: ABV may vary depending on the market), the “perfectly mixed” beverage will roll out to markets around the world in 2025, with an initial launch set for Europe and Mexico.
And for convenience-craving rum and Coke fans stateside? “We are evaluating a U.S. launch for 2025,” a brand spokesperson says.
“We are continuing to develop our portfolio as a total beverage company, including in the growing alcohol ready-to-drink market,” James Quincey, chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Company, says in a statement. “This new relationship with Bacardi Limited supports our strategic expansion.”
Bacardi Limited CEO Mahesh Madhavan says the spirits company is “excited to bring together two iconic brands so that consumers may enjoy one of the world’s most popular cocktails – first invented generations ago with Bacardi rum and Coca-Cola – in a high-quality, convenient format.”
The brands — one a family-owned spirit established in Cuba in 1862 and now based in Bermuda and the other a soft drink created in Atlanta in 1886 — note that they have a long history of partnership. The Cuba Libre cocktail was created at the American bar in Havana in 1900. That original drink featured Bacardi rum, Coca-Cola and lime, and according to the brands, it remains one of the “top bar calls” around the world to this day.
