The Dishes We Loved This Year

We’ll let you in on a secret: Sometimes even food editors struggle to decide what to make for dinner. But luckily for us, it’s our job to develop and recommend recipes, so we’re constantly discovering new favorites — and sharing them with our friends, family and each other. Whether you could use some weeknight inspiration or the perfect dish to bring to a holiday party, we’ve got exactly what you need. These are the recipes we kept coming back to this year, and we bet you’ll love them too.

“If you overlooked our new Fried Cardamom Knots in our annual 12 Days of Cookies list, I implore you to make time for them in your holiday baking schedule before the end of the year. Somewhere between a crispy cookie and a poppable doughnut, these bites are a light and fragrant addition to any cookie tin. They were a big team favorite when we were testing all of our cookies this year, and I’m excited to make them a holiday tradition in my own house.”

Miso Mushroom Pasta

Food Network Kitchen has developed so many amazing recipes, and this creamy pasta is one of them. I love that it includes a wonderful variety of delicate and meaty mushrooms, and the miso adds such great umami flavor. It’s perfect for a weeknight or weekend entertaining.”

Sticky Toffee Sheet Cake

“My favorite Food Network recipe that I baked this year was our Sticky Toffee Sheet Cake! The traditional version of this beloved British cake is baked in individual ramekins and is perfectly sweet and sticky; it’s one of my favorite desserts to order when dining out. But what makes this recipe irresistible is the ease of baking the whole cake on one rimmed baking sheet! You still have the same date-enriched cake with gooey toffee sauce, but it’s approachable and easy, making it perfect for any baker, regardless of their skill level. I would suggest a generous dollop of whipped cream or a big scoop of vanilla ice cream to go alongside your warm slice of cake — definitely one of my favorite bites of the year!”

Perfect Roast Chicken

“I may be the last person in the food world to have finally made Ina’s famous Perfect Roast Chicken recipe. It’s truly as perfect as its name suggests.”

Bo Zai Fan (Clay Pot Rice)

“My favorite recipe that I always try to cook — and what I actually cooked last night — is Clay Pot Rice with Chinese Sausage. This recipe shows how easy the method is to make claypot rice; jasmine rice’s signature fragrant aroma and fluffiness is heightened and highlighted. The main attraction is the crispy, crunchy browned rice on the bottom, which provides a different texture. This is all achieved with a clay pot, an earthenware pot that holds a lot of heat and keeps the food warm for a while; it’s another pot to have at home, but it can also braise or make regular white rice or small portions of soup. Top with Chinese sausage for a sweet, savory touch and make some vegetables of your choice for a balanced meal. A drizzle of sweet soy sauce flavors the rice and caramelizes when the sauce hits the bottom of the clay pot.”

Honey Cake

“I’m absolutely obsessed with this honey cake! I love how simple and casual it is. Despite how unassuming it looks, the beautifully bright and floral flavor will have you grinning at first bite. I’ve been bringing this to gatherings all year long, and it’s always a hit. Be sure to use orange blossom honey; it really makes the flavor pop.”

Sweet Potato and Black Bean Burritos

“I usually have a bag of these meatless burritos stashed in my freezer. The recipe makes 10 at a time, and every time I make them I feel like I’m doing my future self a favor. I love knowing that whenever I need a quick microwavable meal, I can reach for something homemade. The combination of sweet potatoes and black beans is satisfying and surprisingly filling, and the spinach adds a little bitterness. I prefer to swap out the queso fresco for some sharp cheddar to make the filling even more savory. I love the variety of flavors and textures you get with each bite.”

Buffalo-Chicken Macaroni and Cheese

“I first made this mac and cheese when I was stressed out and craving some comfort food. For me, that's usually something cheesy and spicy with plenty of carbs. This recipe delivered everything I wanted and so much more. The sour cream blends perfectly with the sharp cheddar and hot sauce to make each bite rich and tangy. When I eat it, I can’t help smiling!”
