Rice Basics: Method 1

The most common way to make rice is with 2 parts liquid to 1 part rice. Salt the water generously and bring everything to a boil. To add extra flavor, use stock instead of water.

Nice and Fluffy

Cover, lower the heat and let it simmer for 18 minutes. Don't peek because it lets too much moisture escape. Let the rice stand for a few minutes. This makes it nice and fluffy.

Method 2: Pilaf

To make rice pilaf, brown the rice first for 2 to 3 minutes in oil or butter until it looks toasted and smells nutty.

Stir to brown evenly. Once the rice is toasted, add your liquid. Then follow the steps above: boil, salt and simmer for 18 minutes.

Method 3: Cook Rice Like Pasta

You can also cook rice like pasta. This is great for varieties like brown rice that can take a long time to cook. Start with plenty of salted boiling water.

Drain and Serve

Bring to a boil, then lower to a simmer but with no lid. Cook until tender (do a taste test for desired doneness), then drain just like pasta.
