We coffee drinkers probably all think our way of making coffee is the best way. But if your way involves a French press, please pay attention. Bodum USA is recalling 5.9 million French press coffee makers with eight-cup and 12-cup replaceable glass carafes because they may present a “risk of serious burn injury.”

Which Bodum French press models have been recalled?

Subject to recall are Bodum French press coffee makers with eight-cup and 12-cup replaceable glass carafes. The recalled products were sold under the model names Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya.

Most of these models are marked with the Bodum brand name on the frame and inner lid. The Bodum name is also generally engraved, alongside product warnings, on the glass carafes themselves.

Why is Bodum recalling these French press coffee makers?

The coffee makers are being voluntarily recalled because “the carafe can unexpectedly break during use if the glass carafe is damaged or cracked, including by use of a metal spoon to stir the coffee, posing a risk of serious burn injuries,” the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says in a recall notice issued on October 29.

Has anyone been injured by one of these French presses?

Unfortunately, yes. Bodum USA says it has received 70 reports of carafes breaking while people are using them; in 48 of those cases, people have been burned as a result.

“While the rate of reported incidents involving carafe breakage during use is extremely low, especially considering that Bodum has sold millions of these products in the U.S. for decades, this recall will further encourage the safe use of our French Press Coffee Makers,” Bodum USA says in a statement.

What should you do if you have one of the recalled Bodum French presses?

You are directed not to use metal spoons or utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafe and to get in touch with Bodum, which will send you a stirring spoon made of plastic along with a warning label reminding you not to use cracked or damaged carafes or metal spoons. If you use a metal stirring spoon to stir contents in the glass carafe, there is a danger that you could damage the glass, causing it to break during use.

“Going forward, these products will be sold with the plastic stirring spoon and an additional warning label,” Bodum says.

Where were the recalled French presses sold?

The coffee makers, which were manufactured in Portugal and Thailand and imported to the U.S. by New York City-based Bodum USA, were sold from 1974 to October 2026 at Target, Walmart and other retail stores nationwide, as well as online retailers including Bodum.com, Amazon, target.com and walmart.com.

Where can you get more info on the recall?

You can reach Bodum USA toll-free at 888-879-8213 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday; via email at Bodum3302@sedgwick.com; or online here or at www.bodum.com.
