A pudding cup is a nostalgic snack time joy, reminding us of lunchbox desserts or after-school treats. But for those of us who are sensitive to dairy, it has long ago stopped being part of our lives. That is, until the latest news from a major name in the pudding sector.

Jell-O is launching an option for those who are lactose-free or plant-based with a new oat milk pudding that may take you right back.

While the number of dietary alternatives has grown in recent years, the iconic foods of childhood have been a bit slower to catch up. And let’s be honest, while our diets may change over time, it’s hard not to miss an Oreo or Jell-O chocolate pudding cup from time to time. Luckily, some of those foods don’t have to stay stuck in the past. In 2023, Kraft introduced plant-based macaroni and cheese. And for those who have developed gluten intolerances, Oreo launched a gluten-free cookie in 2021.

The new Oat Milk Chocolate Pudding is Jell-O’s first-ever plant-based product, and is also lactose-free and vegan. But it’s not the first time the brand has created a pudding version with dietary restrictions in mind. The first Fat Free Pudding was launched in 1991 and the first Zero Sugar Pudding was launched in 2005.

Consumers want options, and Jell-O’s latest launch joins the growing number of dietary restriction-inclusive products getting stocked on shelves and offered in restaurants. Dietary restrictions no longer have to mean missing out on the little sweet treats that bring us joy.

Food Network had an opportunity to taste the new Oat Milk Chocolate Pudding and it was reminiscent of the classic chocolate pudding. The oat milk base allowed for a rich and creamy texture that other plant-based milks may have not achieved as well. But the flavor was everything we want in a chocolate pudding — chocolatey, creamy and a satisfying, quick snack or dessert.

Jell-O Oat Milk Chocolate Pudding will be available in four-packs for $3.99 at retailers nationwide starting this month.
