These quick stovetop beans, simmered in a sweet and tangy, pantry-friendly barbecue sauce, taste like they’ve been cooking all day, but you can make them in one saucepan in 15 minutes. They’re a versatile summer side perfect for burgers, dogs, grilled chicken or steak.

Directions

  1. Cook 2 chopped strips thick-cut bacon in olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat until crisp. Add 1/2 finely chopped onion; cook 3 minutes. Add 3/4 cup water, 1/4 cup ketchup, 2 tablespoons dark brown sugar, 1 tablespoon cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon each Dijon mustard and Worcestershire sauce and a dash of hot sauce; bring to a simmer. Add 1 can navy beans (drained and rinsed). Cook until thickened, 5 minutes. Season with salt.
