Mother's Day is the perfect time to show the most important lady in your life how much she means to you. With spring in the air, fresh herbs are a gorgeous and delicious way to give Mom a special gift.

Before starting your herb planter, think of a flavor profile or theme that Mom would like. We made a Mediterranean herb garden on the show using oregano, mint, basil, thyme, parsley and rosemary. You could also make a French herb garden using lavender and chervil or an Italian herb garden with different varieties of oregano and rosemary.

When purchasing your herbs, we suggest using starter plants. These are seedlings that have begun to grow. You can find them in most home improvement and outdoor supply stores. Starter plants take the time and hassle out of starting your herbs from seeds.

Now it's time to get those hands dirty! Choose a planter with drainage holes on the bottom to release excess water. Fill the planter about a third of the way with soil. This will provide a good base for the herbs to take root when they are planted.

Next, break up the roots a bit on your starter plants to help them grow out and to anchor them well in the planter. Position the plants in the planter, evenly spacing them.

Fill in between and across the top of the herbs' roots with additional soil. Thoroughly soak the soil with water to help them begin to grow; they will grow to maturity in about four weeks.

Now for the perfect finishing touch! Give Mom a bit of culinary inspiration with her new herbs by adding a recipe card to the planter. Geoffrey Zakarian's Pasta with Lemon Herb Yogurt Sauce is the perfect recipe for our Mediterranean herb garden. It's a trending new way to use yogurt in a savory way, and uses all of the herbs in the planter.

Once mom gets this herb garden, your siblings will be green with envy. Happy Mother's Day!
