As any devoted Pinterester can tell you, many of us rely on KitchenAid mixers or blenders (OK, really the mixers) to add a pop of color to our sleek white or trendy two-toned kitchens. And, oh yes, to bake and cook.

But really, the iconic mixer is an appliance we use for everything – blending, mixing, whipping – and to bring a sense of style and personal expression to our serenely minimalist or defiantly maximalist homes.

The KitchenAid mixer, along with its equally colorful friend, the Le Creuset dutch oven, is a total signifier, a millennial “troph[y] of domesticity,” as The Atlantic recently put it.

Of course, these mixers are an investment and a commitment. Buyers expect them to last a while, so freaking out about what color to buy is a totally reasonable thing to do.

Now, that decision just got a little more complicated. Because KitchenAid has just announced its 2020 Color of the Year. And it is: Kyoto Glow. (What, you thought it was going to be blue?)

Kyoto Glow? The color, in which KitchenAid Artisan Series 5 Quart Tilt-Head mixer and a K400 Blender will be available, is sort of a springtime yellow green, like the pale underside of a new leaf, you could say – or, as KitchenAid puts it, “Kyoto Glow’s vibrant, yet calming green hue allows makers to bring a sense of wellness into their home, showing off a color as lively as they are.”

In 2018, KitchenAid introduced Bird of Paradise as a color of the year, and in 2019, the company offered a limited edition mixer in Passion Red.

Gotta hand it to KitchenAid for continuing to mix things up with new options.
