L’eggo my protein-packed Eggo? Further proving that the protein trend is everywhere, last year, Eggo introduced two flavors of protein-packed waffles: Chocolate Chip Brownie and Strawberry Delight Protein Waffles.

Now the frozen-breakfast-food brand is expanding its protein line with three new flavors: Buttermilk Vanilla Protein Waffles, Vanilla Protein Pancakes and Blueberry Protein Pancakes. Each one promises to deliver 10 grams — or 20 percent of the recommended daily value — of protein per serving, and to do it without compromising on taste.

“When getting the protein you need feels impossible, Eggo makes it irresistible,” Alicia Mosley, vice president of marketing, frozen foods, at Eggo parent company Kellanova, says in a press release. “We’ve focused on keeping taste first while delivering an excellent source of complete protein in every bite. Families are surprised that protein-packed waffles and pancakes can taste this good – but Eggo proves you can fuel your morning without giving up the taste everyone loves.”

I got an advance taste of each of the three new varieties. And my favorite by far were the Buttermilk Vanilla Protein Waffles. Eggo describes them as “crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside,” combining a “cozy buttermilk flavor with a touch of vanilla.” The waffles are easy to prepare — just pop them in the toaster, from which they emerge warm and crisp to taste. And they taste great — kind of like an ice-cream-shop waffle cone, only softer and warmer. These are good enough to eat on their own — without syrup or fruit — but they’d be great with either. I think you could even put some vanilla ice cream on them and turn them into a protein-packed dessert.

I was less enthused, although not displeased, by the pancakes. I preferred the Vanilla Protein Pancakes to the Blueberry Protein Pancakes. The latter smelled a bit like blueberries, but didn’t really taste like them, despite having been described as “bursting with juicy blueberry flavor.” Still, they’re both quick and convenient, going easily from freezer to microwave to table. And with syrup, they were perfectly fine.

I definitely won’t mind finishing the boxes of the pancakes — but it’s the Buttermilk Vanilla Protein Waffles I could most envision buying again.

All three new protein-packed Eggo flavors are now available nationwide. The suggested retail price for a 10-pack of waffles or a 12-pack of pancakes is $5.99.
