As omelet lovers surely know, egg prices are at an all-time high. The current strain of bird flu has killed millions of hens over the past few months and decimated egg production, causing prices to skyrocket.

The average cost of a dozen large grade-A eggs in U.S. cities is up to $4.95, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, beating the record set in January 2023. And that’s just the average. In some places, a carton costs closer to $10. Unfortunately, experts say prices won’t come down anytime soon. What’s an egg enthusiast to do?

A few major retailers appear to have the answer. So far, Trader Joe’s and Costco have been able to keep their egg prices at bay by limiting the number of cartons customers can buy. The two chains have set restrictions nationwide, and certain locations of stores like Kroger have followed suit.

The Trader Joe’s policy appears to be the strictest one so far.

“Due to ongoing issues with the supply of eggs, we are currently limiting egg purchases to one dozen per customer, per day, in all Trader Joe’s stores across the country,” a Trader Joe’s spokesperson told CNN.

Meanwhile, Costco is capping customers at three packages of eggs per transaction, which come in two or four dozen cartons each.

These policies appear to be working to keep shelves stocked and prices down, but it may also be worth scouting out your local farmer’s market. You might find eggs available at relatively decent prices, or at least not drastically different from supermarkets these days.

It’s also worth keeping in mind that with Easter around the corner, demand for eggs is likely to spike again. Now’s a good time to get creative and test out some alternative recipes. And, if you do get your hands on some eggs, make sure to prepare them well — we can’t take them for granted this year.
