To illustrate the importance of flavor, the Chefs provide the eight remaining recruits with a "blank canvas," jointly demonstrating a basic crepe dish. Each recruit must then flavor their own crepe, and the Chefs do a blind taste test. The Chef whose team has the best-tasting crepe gets to steal a player from other team and give up one of their own. Then as a further exploration of flavor, the Chefs demonstrate the basics of marinating and grilling. Each recruit must devise their own marinade, using ingredients from one of four international flavor profiles-France, Greece, Spain and Thailand. Each recruit must also follow a recipe for a side dish to go with their marinated grilled protein, and complete everything within the time allotted.
Guy Fieri has invited some of his best chef friends to the ranch to share their favorite homestyle recipes for an old-fashioned Sunday supper. Alex Guarnaschelli starts the meal off right with a pitcher of Lemony Negronis, and she cooks up a crowd-pleasing Black Pepper-Crusted Roast Beef and Gravy served alongside Sauteed Spinach with Pancetta and Crispy Garlic. Michael Voltaggio makes Smoked Trout Deviled Eggs and surprises his fellow chefs by preparing Swordfish Milanese with Dill Pickle Tartar Sauce. Marc Murphy makes a savory Pork Sausage-Stuffed Zucchini and taps into his French roots with delicate Frisee aux Lardons. Finally, Eric Greenspan braises a succulent Beef Short Rib Stroganoff with Buttered Noodles and Lemon Creme Fraiche and wows the other chefs with his Apple Pie with Cheddar Cheese and Maple Whipped Cream.
Hungry Detective Chris Cognac hits the streets of Beantown hot on the trail of the city’s best off-the-beaten path clam chowder. During his investigation a hot tip from a local fishmonger leads him to Daily Catch, an authentic family-run Italian seafood restaurant in Boston’s historic North End. Next, his search for Boston’s best sweets leads him to J.P. Licks, a local ice cream shop known for its creative concoctions, including ice cream made with Boston’s own Sam Adams beer. As his search for sweets continues, the Hungry Detective heads to Cambridge and follows the college crowd to L.A. Burdick, a coffee shop with a sweet reputation for its creative chocolate desserts, including a decadent brownie known as the Harvard Square. Hot on the trail of a great bargain, Cognac stays in Cambridge and meets up with a college food-blogger known as the Gentleman Gourmand. The Gentleman Gourmand takes him to Mary Chung, a true hidden gem serving up authentic Chinese food at a bargain price. Finally Cognac heads to Charlestown and the Warren Tavern and sniffs out a recipe for clam chowder almost as old as Boston itself.
