Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is back with another flavor we didn’t know we needed — Everything Bagel ice cream.

The Ohio-based brand, which has developed a knack for churning out unusual yet tasty ice cream flavors, released its Everything Bagel variety on Monday as part of its growing “Ice Cream for Breakfast” collection and it fits right in.

The newest addition boasts a base of subtly sweet cream cheese ice cream with buttery streusel laden with sesame, poppy seeds — and yes, onions and garlic — schmeared throughout. On paper, the flavor doesn’t sound like it should work (bagel flavored-ice cream?) but it most certainly does.

Believe me when I say I wasn’t expecting to like this ice cream. As a New York Jew I take my bagels very seriously and have been mocked by my own family members on many occasions for striving to find that perfect cream cheese-to-bagel ratio. I’m also an ice cream purist, who could never imagine putting poppy seeds in a pint, let alone onions and garlic. And yet, this creation mixes both of those things and the result is pretty darn delicious.

The key to this ice cream is that, like a handful of Jeni’s other unexpected flavors (Goat Cheese with Red Cherries, anyone?) the balance between sweet and savory is practically perfect. So instead of feeling like an intrusion into what is a very respectable cream cheese ice cream in its own right, the onions and garlic felt like a welcome addition — necessary to balance out the inherently light and sweet base.

In fact, at one point I even found myself seeking out the garlic and onion bits the way one might hunt for globs of cookie dough in a bowl of cookie dough ice cream, or search for those little chocolate fish in a pint of Phish Food.

What’s more? It’s totally respectable to dig into a pint of Everything Bagel for breakfast since it absolutely tastes like the food it’s named after! Jeni’s “Ice Cream for Breakfast” collection also includes Coffee With Cream & Sugar, Honey Vanilla Bean, Skillet Cinnamon Roll and the Froot Loop-esque Wildberry Lavender.
