Is your name Reese? Do you know a Reese? Are you a big fan of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Snickers or lighthearted brand rivalries? If you answered any of those questions in the affirmative, you’ll want to pay attention.
Mars is needling rival Hershey’s, maker of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, by assembling a focus group of people named “Reese” (spellings may vary) to endorse Snickers Peanut Butter candy bars and ice cream — and by offering every “Reese” (again, spellings may vary) in America a chance to win a year’s supply of Snickers Peanut Butter.
What are Snickers Peanut Butter and Snickers Peanut Butter Ice Cream?
Snickers Peanut Butter, for those unfamiliar, is a candy bar featuring “real, creamy peanut butter, crunchy peanuts, rich caramel and fluffy nougat, all covered in milk chocolate,” Mars says. Snickers Peanut Butter Ice Cream, launched last fall, “delivers everything people know and love about Snickers Ice Cream, but with the satisfying crunch of peanuts both inside the ice cream and on top."
The brand says the products render moot the debate between creamy and crunchy peanut butter by offering both textures in one bite.
"When it comes to peanut butter and chocolate, people usually feel they have to compromise, but Snickers Peanut Butter delivers real creamy peanut butter and crunchy peanuts for the ultimate multisensorial satisfaction," Martin Terwilliger, marketing vice president for Mars Wrigley North America, says in a press release.
How is Snickers poking fun at Reese’s?
Snickers pulled together a focus group of people named Reese — or Reece, or Rhys, or whatever — for a series of funny short video clips produced and directed by comedian Eric André. As the participants taste Snickers Peanut Butter and Snickers Peanut Butter Ice Cream for the first time, their reactions are positive.
“Delicious,” says one Reese (or Reece or Rhys) in a video posted on YouTube.
“So you could say that Reeses want you to try Snickers Peanut Butter,” the focus group leader responds.
“Seems fair to me,” another Reese (or Reece or Rhys) muses.
You get the idea.
What is Snickers offering to other people named Reese (or Reece or Rhys)?
Basically, anyone in America with the first, middle or last name of “Reese” (any spelling) can “publicly pledge their love for Snickers Peanut Butter for a shot at winning a year's supply of the candy bars.”
Those eligible can sign the official Snickers Peanut Butter pledge by Thursday, June 11, for a chance to win.
“By signing, participants declare their loyalty to the multi-sensorial satisfaction that only Snickers Peanut Butter delivers,” Snickers says.
The first 100 people named Reese (spelling may vary) to sign the form will receive “special rewards,” Snickers says. Then, 25 more Reeses will be randomly selected to receive a year’s supply of Snickers Peanut Butter.
Has Reese’s responded to Snickers’ jab?
It seems like it, but obliquely.
“Heavy is the cup that holds the crown,” an image posted on the Reese’s Instagram page reads. Alongside that post is this caption: “When you need our name to sell your peanut butter.”
Another series of images carries this message from Reese’s: “They can try but they’re not like cups.” That caption: “Rent free.” (Presumably as in: living in Snickers’ head.)
Where can you get Snickers Peanut Butter and Snickers Peanut Butter Ice Cream?
Both products are now available at retailers nationwide.
