McDonald's Beloved Shamrock Shake Is Coming Back
The OREO Shamrock McFlurry is also making a return.

With the recent news that we’ll have to suffer through at least six more weeks of winter weather, (thanks Punxsutawney Phil!) McDonald’s decided to lift our spirits by revealing that one of its most beloved menu items is soon slated to return — the Shamrock Shake.
The chain announced the news in a press release on Tuesday, and noted that the “fan-favorite OREO Shamrock McFlurry,” which debuted last year, is also coming back to delight customers. According to the release, the tasty treats will be available starting February 15 for a limited time at participating U.S. restaurants.
“For more than 50 years, fans have eagerly awaited the annual return of the Shamrock Shake, counting on the arrival of Shamrock Shake Season to mark the unofficial start to spring," McDonald's Sr. Director of Culinary, Chad Schafer, said in a statement. "And we heard they especially enjoyed getting a taste of the one-and-only Shamrock flavor in a new way last year with the OREO Shamrock McFlurry.”
Schafer added: “We know this winter may feel longer than others so we're thrilled to give customers something to look forward to by bringing both fan-favorites back to the menu this month.”
For all you Shamrock Shake newbies, here’s what you can expect: The Shamrock Shake features creamy, vanilla soft serve, blended with McDonald’s unmistakable Shamrock Shake flavor, finished with a whipped topping for a delicious, minty treat. While McDonald’s hasn’t made its exact Shamrock Shake recipe public, there are some pretty delicious dupes you can whip up at home.
For its part, the OREO Shamrock McFlurry features creamy, vanilla soft serve with that same Shamrock Shake flavor. However, the McFlurry also boasts OREO cookie pieces blended throughout for a combination that's “mint to be.”
As McDonald’s aficionados may know, the Shamrock Shake was created in 1967 by Hal Rosen, a Connecticut McDonald's owner who invented the sugary drink in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. It later debuted in select locations across the U.S. in 1970, and was an instant success. Today, the creamy treat is the most anticipated dessert to reappear on McDonald’s menus each year.
In 2020, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Shamrock Shake, McDonald’s even auctioned off a hand-crafted 18K high-polish gold cup, bedazzled with 50 green emeralds and white diamonds, and 50 yellow diamonds in the shape of the famous yellow arches. The one-of-a-kind item, appraised at $90,000, was designed to “perfectly hold minty-green, Shamrock Shake deliciousness.”
