Snow may still be on the ground, the air frigid and the trees bare where you are, but that doesn’t mean spring isn’t coming. A sure sign it’s on its way: McDonald’s Shamrock Shake is making its annual return, along with its equally verdant companion, the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry.

Here’s what you need to know:

When is McDonald’s Shamrock Shake coming back?

Both the Shamrock Shake and the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry will return to participating McDonald’s restaurants nationwide for a limited time starting Tuesday, February 17.

What is a Shamrock Shake?

The Shamrock Shake starts with McDonald’s vanilla soft serve, which is then blended with mint-flavored, mint-hued “Shamrock” syrup and topped with whipped cream.

It’s a McDonald’s classic, a pale green icon celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, that was created in 1967 and first debuted in select U.S. locations of the burger chain in 1970. The Shamrock Shake went national for the first (but not the only) time in 2012. (Before that, diehard Shamrock Shake fans used to track location availability online.)

In 2020, McDonald’s celebrated the Shamrock Shake’s 50th anniversary by making it available nationwide for the first time since 2017. That same year, the Shamrock Shake became a seasonal favorite available in Canada and Ireland as well in the U.S.

What is McDonald’s Oreo Shamrock McFlurry?

McDonald’s introduced the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry, a new twist on its classic Shamrock Shake, in 2020 — the year that marked the 50th anniversary of the iconic green shake’s debut.

Made for those who like their “minty magic with a cookie twist,” as the brand puts it, the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry blends McDonald’s vanilla soft serve with minty-green “Shamrock” syrup and then mixes in pieces of Oreo cookies.

How long will the Shamrock Shake and the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry be available?

McDonald’s hasn’t announced a date when the seasonal treats will cease to be available for 2026, but it has cautioned that they “won’t be around forever.”

“Catch them before they vanish like a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow,” the brand says. Cute, yes, but also, Shamrock Shake fans, don’t say you weren’t warned.
