Minty Hot Chocolate

Flavor this homemade hot cocoa with peppermint extract, and serve it with a peppermint stick.

4 cups low-fat milk (2-percent)

3/4 cup sugar

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (not Dutch process)

4 ounces semisweet chocolate, finely chopped

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1/8 to 1/4 teaspoon pure peppermint extract

Whipped cream and peppermint sticks, for serving


  1. Heat the milk, sugar, cocoa powder, chocolate and vanilla in a medium saucepan over medium heat, whisking occasionally until the sugar dissolves, the chocolate melts and the mixture is hot and steaming. Stir in the peppermint extract, adding the full amount for a stronger mint flavor. Divide between 4 mugs and serve with a spoonful of whipped cream and a peppermint stick.
